Are you a people pleaser? Now before you answer or judge if being a people pleaser is a good or bad thing, I'm asking you to hear me out. 🤔
In my opinion, the phrase "people pleaser" has gotten a bad wrap. To me, it would be great if the phrase really meant what it suggested: someone who pleases others. If you please others, how could that be a bad thing? Isn't that kinda the Golden Rule? Do unto others as you'd have them do unto you? Please others, and they please you! 👍
I think the phrase gets a bad wrap because some people try and please others at any cost. Unfortunately, this often means using their already limited time and energy. This can be at the expense of their own health, leaving them depleted, wasted, and without energy. Sometimes these same people really do care about other's opinions.....more than their own. 😬
Now, if I were a gambling woman, I'd say some of you are people pleasers. I am. I love it when my actions and words make others pleased. But. I also know when I have available energy to do it. This is when all my own self-care boxes are checked, and I have enough surplus in my account to give away. ☑️
I wasn't born this way. I had to learn to balance self-care and being a people pleaser. This is the deal. Pleasing others is a blessing, it can be your superpower. 🦸🏻♀️ But it can also be your curse if you please others at the expense of your self-esteem, or to the point of depletion, resentment, and annoyance.
This whole premise will come a little easier for all of you "thinkers." Those who do not see everything as either black or white. Who pause and consider. Ponder. Who feel deeply and care greatly.
Maybe you don't think that describes you right now. There is still time to develop both "thinking" and "knowing" on a deeper, more authentic level. Then, you can continue to help others and also have a reserve of energy, contentment, and joy for you. 💜
This week, try balancing people-pleasing with self-care. Send me an email and let me know how it goes! 👌😁
With a hug,
