Welcome to week 17 of The Weekly Well! Here is where you will find weekly inspiration to live your best life. This week I want to talk about how to break the worry habit by learning to guard your mind. Worry, along with anxiety and fears are so prevalent in our society. If not kept in check or dealt with they can paralyze our lives!
There is a saying I love:
Yesterday is heavy, put it down.
Yes! We need to break the worry habit for a ton of reasons. For example, when we feel worried, angry, or fearful, it doesn't just affect our minds. It affects our entire being, heart, and physical health. Honestly, I think people don't accept that truth. I hear all the time, "I am a worrier; I was born this way."
Bull shit, friends! Worry is a habit, and guess what that means? You can break the habit! So no, you weren't born that way.
Let's get more real for a minute...I recently saw a study that said 5 minutes of being angry has the same results on your body as 6 hours of an impaired immune system. Can you imagine?! The study just mentioned anger, but I bet you could insert worry instead. That is serious friends. Worry DOES NOT serve you!!
Start right now, yes, like today to get a handle on your mind, thoughts, and break the worry habit! You will have a positive impact on your health. Optimists were not born optimists (just like worriers ). They also have to work towards a fit mind!
Tips to Break the Worry Habit
Guard your mind as if your life depends on it (cause, it kind of does!). Try this guided meditation with me:
Picture your mind and then picture it with a front door. Now open that door and imagine there is wall-to-wall white carpeting. This gorgeous white carpeting is in pristine condition and looks stunning.
Someone rings the doorbell, so you go and answer the door. Whoa, someone is standing there with the most filthy, muddy boots you have ever seen. What do you do? Well, you sure as hell don't let them in to walk all over that carpet because you know they will ruin it.
That, my friends, is how you guard your mind. Guard it like a bulldog! Think of negative thoughts and worry just like those muddy boots and DO NOT let them in to walk all over the carpet.
Here is an example that I bet most of us have experienced. You are driving home from work, a doctor's appointment, or from a long day with your kiddos, and you feel completely stressed, anxious, worried, and overwhelmed. Honestly, you are spiraling out!
What I want you to do is pause.
This my friends is the makings of changing the worry habit!! We have to first pause long enough to acknowledge what is happening, then shift. Flood yourself with positive emotions.
A gratitude checklist is a perfect way to shift those negative thoughts into positive ones! Here are a few places to start:
- What am I most grateful for in this moment? Truthfully, there could be chaos breaking out all around, and you can still be grateful that you can hear that chaos.
- What am I the proudest of in my life? When we feel defeated, ass dragging, and like we can't possibly get another project done, this is the perfect time to stop and say what you are most proud of in life. Your kids? That half-marathon you ran? A beautiful piece of art?
- Who brings joy to my life? Picture someone that is a love of yours. Just thinking their name will bring happiness!
This checklist can help you break the worry habit and begin to guard your mind!
Wrap It Up
I want to take a minute before I go and discuss another way worry and anxiety are introduced into our lives. Conversations: and that can be in-person, text, telephone, or social media. Be hyper-vigilante about who you have conversations with and remember that anything negative will not serve you.
There have been studies that show the negative effects social media has on us. These effects are for adults too...not just kids! FOMO is real people! Judging our body image based on others...also real. A super cool party you weren't invited to and you feel like garbage about...all too real.
We have to be careful how we let ourselves absorb negativity so we can break the worry habit! Again. Don't let anyone in with muddy boots. They will ruin your carpet!
Without Further Ado, Here is the Seventeenth Edition:
Before I leave you until next week, you got this...and I got you! You are in charge of your mind...so go, take charge!!
