To say this is a crazy time is the understatement of the century...holy moly!!!
As our Plan A's are put on hold, and boy oh boy did we have plans...plans for work, plans for our kids to learn in a school, plans for vacation, and plans for our lives. We are learning how to navigate Plan B. We are all feeling the impact of disrupted plans, and the uncertainty that comes from our new "normal."
So, therefore, It's only natural that...
Plans get disrupted, as they have, we feel a lack of control.
But. That's not the scariest part...
The scariest part is when we feel like we have no control, fear sets in FAST.
Unless...we stop and remember what we can control.
And here, my friends are three BIG things you still have complete control over:
1.) You can control whether you are informed or inundated.
Being informed regarding the COVID-19 (or coronavirus disease) is necessary because this virus is impacting many aspects of our lives. Staying informed of the facts is helpful in the navigation of this uncharted territory we are now in. However, inundation by 24-hour negative, scary news is not helpful. Inundation leads to fear, paralysis, and hopelessness.
2.) You can control what you focus on.
What you focus on you feel. If you think this is absolutely awful, the world is doomed! Then, of course, you are going to feel awful. Instead, you can choose to focus on what is going well, your good health, and the things that you still can do. Like going outside and taking a walk, listening to music, cuddling up and reading with your little one, and the ability to work from home. Which not very long ago, would not even have been a possibility for millions and millions of people.
3.) You can control your thoughts.
Thoughts are not facts. Just because you are thinking something does not make it true. Now more than ever, it is our job to stand guard at the doorway of our minds. Look at it this way, if you had white carpeting in your home, would you allow someone to come in with wet, muddy boots and walk all over that carpeting? Of course not!
So, let's pretend for a moment, shall we? Let's pretend; you are "The Guard on Duty" of your mind. Picture the inside of your mind is a room covered with white carpeting and negative, fearful thoughts are the muddy boots. Someone comes up to the door and rings the bell and asks to come in. Remember you are ON DUTY. You have the choice to say, "No, sorry, not on my watch. You are not allowed inside."
And if by mistake a pair of muddy boots slip in through the back door and you find yourself stuck in a negative thought cycle, unsure of how to escape, try this: Question your thought. Ask yourself, Is this true? Is it true that "This is the worst thing ever?" Then answer honestly. Well no, I guess it's not the worst thing ever, I am enjoying the slowdown from the constant running, etc. Question your thought. If it's not true, drop it, and choose another.
So, there you have it, friend, even though we are in unprecedented times, you still have control over how you choose to be in them. For your mental health and happiness, I suggest you choose very wisely. Otherwise, the world is going to choose for you. And that my friend would be a pure shame. Let's not let that happen!
Now I want to hear from you. Please let me know how you are navigating your new plan B.
